I am
passionate about supporting refugees because not a lot of people would choose
to leave their countries and everything they know to start a new life in a
strange country. A lot of them suffer from anxiety and depression to due
the challenges they did not anticipate for and some terribly miss their
families and friends. Even eating is challenging as they may not know
where to buy their traditional food.
As an
immigrant myself, it is very challenging moving to a new country. You probably
don’t speak the language and the culture is different and in my case “it was
bloody cold.” I didn’t have the right clothes and it was a culture shock for
me.
Of
course, individual experiences differ, but the anxiety and fears are similar
unless you have a wealth of support financially and family/friends to welcome
you.
What
breaks my heart is the people taking huge risks of going through the Libya
desert and the Mediterranean Sea. A lot of people continue to take the risk as
they feel their situation is worse that facing the dangers at their countries.
Economic immigrants maybe so desperate to support their families that they are
willing to die in the process. The refugees face even more suffering or death
due to war and they have little or no choice. A lot of them don’t understand
the risks as the people strugglers lie to them to take their money.
Some
are killed, raped, sold into slavery, families held hostage for ransom,
drowning and many more traumatic experiences await if they finally make to
land.
So,
one could understand why they take the risks. Would I do the same thing?
Probably, if I was desperate enough.
